New ESC position statement on managing tricuspid valve regurgitation

The European Society of Cardiology Working Groups of Cardiovascular Surgery and Valvular Heart Disease published a position statement on managing tricuspid valve regurgitation on 21 August 2017 in the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (online).

Key points include a systematic multimodality approach to diagnosis and assessment, and the treatment of secondary tricuspid regurgitation at the same time as mitral valve (and, sometimes, aortic valve) surgery.

In the Working Groups’ view, surgery is still the best approach for the interventional treatment of tricuspid regurgitation, although they acknowledge that percutaneous tricuspid valve intervention may be a reliable option in the future.
