STS score is the best predictor of mortality and morbidity in mitral valve surgery
March 23, 2017
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) score is the best system for predicting mortality and morbidity for mitral valve repair or replacement surgery, according to a study on patients undergoing surgery at Auckland City Hospital.
Tom Wang and colleagues assessed the ability of three different scoring systems to discriminate and calibrate for mortality and morbidity: European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE), EuroSCORE II AND STS.
The STS score was the best at predicting renal failure, ventilation for more than 24 hours and composite comorbidity, and was the best overall predictor of mortality and morbidity in patients who underwent mitral valve surgery.
